Small Patio Ideas

Even if you only have a small space, you can still entertain some small patio ideas. A patio doesn't have to be large to be enjoyed! We all need a little outdoor space to get fresh air, relax and do other activities like grilling.

First you need to decide the shape of your patio. This may be very easy if your space is limited. If you have a larger yard, you can play a little more with the shape of your patio. Maybe you want to incorporate built-in planters or add a curved edge.

Best Patio Colors

As with any small space, lighter colors and patterens should always be used rather than dark colors and large patterens. The light colors or neutral colors will help make your space seem bigger. Carry the the use of light colors when you are choosing your patio furniture. Light colored wood furniture or white wicker are excellent for a small patio.

To add some color to your patio think of accent pieces such as planter, vases or decorative objects.

Patio Floor

Once you know how you want your patio to look, it is time to decide on which material you want to use to build it. There are lots of choices to fit every budget and artistic temperament. Bricks will give you a traditional feel, while pavers take that feeling and give it a little tweak.

Concrete was once the most boring of choices, but not anymore! Today, concrete can be dyed, stamped, stenciled, textured and decorated. Natural stone is a bit more pricy, but it makes an impressive patio. Another alternative is to combine materials.

Maybe mix brick with sections of concrete or stone tiles, for example. Be sure to choose an option that not only fits your budget, but complements your home. Alternatively, if you have an existing concrete patio that you'd like to fix up, decorative concrete overlays can be done to make it look like a brand new patio.

Patio Covers and Railings

Railings and overhead covers are small patio ideas you may want to consider. Railings can give plants a place to climb while keeping the view open. Railings can be made of wrought iron, formed plastic, wood or a combination of these materials.

Overhead covers are available to provide shade to your small patio. Some are permanent. Others are retractable, so you can pull the cover out if you wish, or keep the view of the sky open. The pillars needed to provide the structure for the cover can be covered in clematis or grape vines to help provide shade or just to add beauty.

Patio Containers

A small patio can be decorated with a pot or two of plants. For example, adding a large pot to contain a bamboo or specimen plant like a photinia or you could put a trellis in the pot and grow a clematis or other decorative vine.

Another small patio idea would be to put a cluster of various sized containers with a variety of colorful plants to decorate your patio. Place a small water feature in the center and you have an entire garden to decorate your small patio!

Patio Furniture

Of course you probably want a place to sit on your patio. When choosing your patio furniture, keep the size of your patio in mind. Some great styles to consider as small patio ideas include wrought iron, cast aluminum and other styles that feature an open structure.

Bulky furniture will take up more room and make your patio crowded. An open style of furniture will at least give the illusion of more space.

Patio Lighting

If you plan on using your patio at night for outdoor dining or for entertaining, you'll want to consider lighting. Are you satisfied with a simple bare light bulb, or do you prefer more elaborate lighting? If your patio adjoins the house, simply using a decorative outdoor light may be adequate. You can also add strings of decorative lights.

Outdoor patio lights can range from simple lanterns to complex bunches of plastic grapes or wisteria blossoms. You can even change your lighting according to the season or by the holiday, since they come in so many designs.

If you like the idea of your patio becoming an outdoor room, you can even get weather-proof woven rugs to lie out. They come in a variety of colors and patterns to fit a variety of tastes. As you can see, there are many small patio ideas to choose from. Take a look at your budget and your taste and see what you can accomplish in creating your own outdoor oasis.
