Sargent JuniperSargent juniper is a fast growing evergreen shrub that is perfect for groundcover. The bright green foliage maintains its greenness all winter long. The green has just a hint of blue to darken it. It easily withstands many conditions that many plants cannot tolerate like heat and salt. It is very hardy and low maintenance. This plant hails from the shores of Japan and it does particularly well in rocky coastal soil. It is also a great candidate for bonsai. Left to its own devices, this juniper will grow up to 24 inches tall and 7 or 8 feet wide. The mounding growth habit is attractive with its pointed branches that form a thick mat of green. This variety of juniper is resistant to juniper blight as well as to deer and rabbits. Pruning is only necessary to remove damaged branches, unless you're making a bonsai, in which case Sargent juniper tolerates heavy pruning well. When planting in the garden, mulch is helpful to keep weeds down while the juniper grows. Plants should be spaced 6 to 8 feet apart for mass plantings.
