I am looking for a quick growing shrub that can be made into a hedge. I would like to have some colour (like the Burning Bush).
I have young children as well as a dog therefore the shrub must be safe for them. The hedge will be placed in full sun and the soil doesn't very well. The hardiness zone is 2b. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This really doesn't qualify has a hedge shrub, but meets the other criteria that you want.
The Hedgerow Gold Redosier Dogwood it grows fast to about 3 to 6 foot tall and wide. It is variegated with a golden foilage. It blloms in late spring with white flowers. It is deciduous, but the bright red twigs or stems would give you winter interest.
