Petite Snow Butterfly Bush

White Butterfly Bush

The Petite Snow Butterfly Bush makes a striking impression in your yard. The large spikes of showy white flowers are very fragrant. Butterflies love this plant, as do hummingbirds and bees. It makes an excellent accent or background plant.

This deciduous shrub loves full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. It grows fast up to 6 feet tall and up to 5 feet wide.

Flower spikes look beautiful in cut flower arrangements, either alone or with a combination of flowers. Long pointed leaves provide a nice background for the flowers.

Landscaping Ideas

The Petite Snow Butterfly Bush is very suitable for an old fashioned cottage garden.

Plant it in borders or along the side of the house as the blooms are the right height to see from inside the windows. The fragrant showy flowers make a splash in the garden.

Since the flowers are white, they can be planted with almost anything. Coneflowers, lantana, mallows and daylilies all make great companion plants for a white butterfly bush.

It also makes a wonderful background plant for a moonlight garden.

The white blooms will add height to what otherwise is usually a fairly flat garden layout with white flowers that reflect the moonlight.

Care And Pruning

Plant your white butterfly bush in full sun for the best blooms. It likes well-drained soil, though it is adaptable. Water regularly to establish the plant, after that it is fairly drought tolerant.

It grows fast, so plant it somewhere there is plenty of room.

Pruning can be done when flowering is done or in early spring before growth begins. If you get snow in the winter, wait to prune until early spring so the canes can protect the base of the plant from the cold. Blooms grow on new wood, so pruning last season's growth won't affect this season's flowers.

Feed with a general purpose fertilizer early in spring. This plant is deer and pest resistant, though some insects can cause an infestation if the plant is stressed.

Volunteer seedlings may become a problem in some areas.
