Overdam Feather Reed GrassOverdam feather reed grass is native to Europe. It is a very sturdy ornamental grass that will maintain its height even after heavy storms. This beautiful cool season grass has a nice vertical growth habit that contrasts nicely with other garden plants. The narrow leaves are rather stiff. They are variegated green and white most of the year and then turn tan in the winter. In the summer, flower stalks rise above the foliage level baring feathery flowers in a pinkish-green hue. These flowers turn gold as the seeds mature and end up tan for winter. The clumps maintain their shape all year, providing winter interest. Planting IdeasOverdam feather reed grass looks good as a specimen plant. It adds a tall architectural quality to small gardens. It has showy flowers that make good additions to fresh and dried arrangements. The seed heads attract wild birds. Beware of too much shade, however as it may flop without sufficient light. It likes moisture, so keep it watered. It is deer resistant and has few natural pests. This is a cool season grass, so it will continue to look nice as the weather gets cooler. Leave the foliage in place until early spring and then prune off the dead parts to stimulate new growth. Leave about one third of the plant intact to protect the crown. Clumps can be divided in the spring to keep the clump's size controlled. Transplanting can occur at any time of year. Grass Information
