With the popularity of backyard outdoor entertaining growing by leaps and bounds, adding a outdoor patio fireplace are on the minds of many. Outdoor fireplaces can add warmth to a chilly night, it can add romance, and it can be center stage for toasting marshmallows or making s'mores and pizzas. A permanent outdoor fireplace can be a good investment for your house as well.

If you want a built-in outdoor fireplace, you can go with masonry that features brick, stone or something unique from a local quarry. You can also choose to have it formed from concrete. Concrete fireplaces can be made into many different shapes and stone can also be incorporated in the design. You can have a rustic look or a smooth look that is reminiscent of a hacienda.

A classic fireplace with a venting hood is also possible. This style looks especially good when it is covered by a patio roof or a classic gazebo. Classic fireplace looks may mimic Mexican architecture or European castles. Wood storage space can be built right in, or shelves can be included for a stereo or decorative items. Tiles and concrete coloring or patterning can also be incorporated.

Choosing concrete for your outdoor fireplace offers durability, versatility and very little maintenance. It withstands the elements well and can be set up for burning wood or gas.

Another outdoor fireplace idea is to purchase a kit. These kits allow you to build your own outdoor fireplace with bricks or stone. All you need is a little basic construction skill to do this yourself. There are several kits available online from various companies.

Patio Fire Pits

If you have a more limited budget, there are many portable outdoor patio fireplace ideas available. Free-standing options like a patio fire pit may fit your budget and your space. Fire pits come in many shapes, sizes and designs and they are easily found at your local home improvement store or online.

Many are made of attractive redwood, cast iron, granite ,stainless steel or copper. Some even come with cooking grills or tabletops to use when a fire is not lit.

Fire pits should be covered or moved to a safe place during the winter to protect them. Since they are small and portable, you do have the option to move them about and experiment where the best location for them may be. That's not something you can do with a permanent structure. Fire pits are also useful for having all the traditional campfire fun. For such a small, portable fireplace, a fire pit can be extremely versatile.

Chimineas

Chimineas are another outdoor patio fireplace idea that may fit the bill. These Mexican style fireplaces are small and portable. They are usually made of clay or cast iron. These fireplaces are distinctive for their round bottoms and tall thin chimneys. They work well in small spaces like decks and small patios.

Chimineas also add a touch of old Mexico to your back yard, especially if you get one that is decorated. You can still use your chiminea in many of the ways you can use a fire pit. The opening is a bit smaller, so you must take that into consideration, but you can still toast marshmallows or cozy up to it to watch falling stars or the latest lunar eclipse.

If you have small children, it may be advisable to surround it with a safety fence. The chiminea can get very hot. Like the fire pit, you can move the chiminea as needed to find the right location or to protect it from the weather.

With all the ideas out there now to have your own outdoor fireplace, you're sure to find something you like that fits your budget. Look carefully at your choices and then get prepared to enjoy some late nights outdoors enjoying the summer.
