Nikko Blue Hydrangea

The Nikko Blue hydrangea plant is a big leaf shrub with large globes of flowers. The flowers will be blue or pink, depending on the pH of the soil. The shrub blooms in June and last for about two months.

The globes of flowers can reach 9 inches in diameter. The flowers are full and fluffy, and make excellent dried flowers for everlasting arrangements. The foliage is serrated and lustrous. This traditional garden shrub is easy to care for and grows quickly enough to reach its full height in a few years.

Landscaping With the Nikko

Nikko Blue hydrangea can be used in a mass planting or near the foundation. This deciduous shrub also looks nice in a mixed border or as a specimen plant.

It likes partial shade, so it easily fills a spot that may otherwise be difficult to fill. It also looks nice in a large container on the patio.

If you need a plant to bloom beneath trees, this is a good choice. Nikko Blue hydrangea complements white or pink camellias and winter daphne. Cut the fresh flowers for large bouquets.

Hydrangea Care

The Nikko likes rich well drained soil that is kept moderately moist. This plant prefers partial shade. It will only tolerate full sun if there is adequate moisture. This plant does not tolerate drought.

The soil should be kept acidic if you want the flowers to remain blue. Add aluminum sulfate to keep it acidic. If the soil turns alkaline they flowers will turn pink. Adding lime to the soil can help turn the soil alkaline.

Neutral soil makes the flowers white. Add any amendments to the soil in late fall or early spring. The flowers bloom on old wood. Prune after flowering is over. Be sure to remove any weak or stems that have been damaged in the winter in early spring. In colder winters protect the plant with mulch and wrap.

There are no serious problems with disease or insects, though they may be susceptible to bacterial wilt, bud blight, mildew and leaf spot. Aphids may be a problem for a stressed plant.
