Neon Flash Spirea

Neon Flash Spirea is a low growing shrub that will give you a lot of color. It is semi-deciduous depending on where you live. The leaves are pointed with toothed edges and can get up to 5 inches long. New growth is a colorful red which then fades to green as the leaf matures.

Red clusters of flowers appear in late spring and last all summer long. The name of this particular cultivar references the brightness of the flowers.

In the autumn, the leaves turn a dark red. This shrub grows fast, so any pruning you need to do is quickly filled in with new growth.

Landscape Ideas

Neon Flash Spirea is colorful enough to use as a specimen plant. You can also use them to great effect in a mass planting along a property line or as a border. They work well in containers for a spot of color. Add them to a mixed shrub foundation planting.

You can even use them for a nice informal low hedge. They are known for attracting butterflies, bees and birds to the garden. This Spirea bush is a good choice for firescaping your yard. The flowers are showy enough to add to cut arrangements. Plant this shrub in a cottage garden for a wonderful look.

Planting And Care Tips

Neon Flash Spirea is easy to care for and maintain. Plant in full or dappled sun for the best color. Water regularly until the plant is established. Mulch around the plant to help preserve moisture in hot months.

Prune back the oldest branches to the ground every other year for bushy growth. Deadhead the spent flowers to promote a longer blooming period.

This shrub is tolerant of drought, deer, rabbits, and pollution. It works well on a slope to help with erosion. It also grows well in coastal regions or in windy areas. Heat and humidity do not bother it.

Watch out for fire blight, powdery mildew, aphids and scale. Use water to wash off insects or use an insecticidal soap. Provide good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew. Spirea Information
