Hollywood Juniper

The Hollywood Juniper has a wild, rustic appearance. The evergreen shrub branches naturally twist into different directions if left to its own growth habit. It does very well in coastal regions and adapts well to topiary shapes.

It is a fast growing shrub, reaching heights of 15 feet tall at maturity. It prefers a sunny spot for optimum health. Extremely cold hardy, this juniper does well in many regions.

It even withstands the heat of Arizona, where it can tolerate light shade. Native to Asia, the Hollywood Juniper is so named because of its popularity in California gardens. You may also find this variety labeled as 'Torulosa' cultivar.

Companion Plant Ideas

Plant Hollywood Juniper with rosemary, Mexican sage, lavender, yarrow, Desert Spoon, yucca, Rose of Sharon, Heavenly Bamboo, Japanese maples or flowering quince for a nice contrast in texture, form and color.

The deep green color looks wonderful against white or peach colored walls. It can be used to mark entry ways or to make an informal hedge. It looks best as a single specimen, however.

Use this juniper in Asian, Mediterranean and Southwestern styled gardens to great effect. It can be pruned so it grows as a standard tree rather than its natural form. It can be trained as a bonsai specimen.

Planting And Care Tips

For the best growth plant this Juniper in a sunny location. Water regularly until established. Hollywood Juniper is drought tolerant after about a year. Soil can be of many types as long as it is well drained. Junipers don't like wet roots.

Protect this juniper from deer. They tend to eat this variety more than others. A simple wire cage around the shrub will protect it until it reaches maturity. Deer may also use this shrub to polish their antlers.

This shrub is safe to plant beneath power lines. They attract birds that come to eat the tiny berries that form. This juniper can be propagated by seed, layering or cuttings taken in late summer.
