Blue Star Juniper

Blue Star Juniper offers sparkling silver blue foliage on a mounded form. It makes a wonderful contrast against green deciduous shrubs. The plant is very dense and solid looking.

As an evergreen shrub, it offers year round interest wherever you plant it. The bloom is insignificant and there is no change in fall. If you look closely at the foliage, the needles form a star shaped pattern. Blue Star Juniper is native to China.

The wood emits a wonderful fragrance when it is burned and is often used to create incense and firewood.

Landscaping Ideas

Blue Star Juniper grows in wide graceful mounds that look terrific as specimens or in group plantings. This juniper works well for rock gardens, banks and on slopes. It looks wonderful in pots as well.

The dramatic color makes quite a stir when paired up with cotoneaster, holly, dogwood, witch hazel, ninebark or weigela. It attracts wildlife and provides erosion control. It can be planted as a low informal hedge. Use as a foundation plant or as part of a mixed border for an eye catching display.

The silvery foliage makes a nice sight in winter, especially in flower gardens, or background plantings. This plant makes an excellent bonsai or topiary specimen. It can also be espaliered on a wall for a unique look. This juniper is a very versatile shrub.

Planting And Care

Blue Star Juniper likes to be situated in full sun. Plant it in well drained soil and water regularly. Once the plant is established it is very drought tolerant. Like all junipers, it appreciates a good mulch around its base. It has a slow growth rate.

Pruning only needs to be done when dead material needs to be removed. It tolerates a wide range of soils, although it does not like wet ground. When waterlogged, the roots may rot. It may fall prey to juniper blight, aphids, spider mites and twig borers, so examine the plant occasionally. It propagates easily with softwood cuttings if you provide misting and bottom heat.
