Barberry Shrub

Varieties of Barberry Shrubs

The barberry shrub was named for it's sharp "barbs" or thorns that it has, along with the berries it produces in the fall. Depending on the variety you get, many will have spring flowers that are fragrant. The summer foliage is outstanding and many barberry's will produce berries in the Fall as well as change foliage colors.

Once established the barberry shrub is one of the lowest maintenance shrubs you will have in your yard. You can trim it to maintain it's shape and size or you can let it grow freely. The long branches will arch towards the ground as they get longer.

The thorns on the barberry shrub make them great for deterring deer and other animals. I would not call them deer resistant as I have seen them damage by deer. Another use of the barberry shrub is as a security plant. The thorns on the barberry might deter unwanted visitors.

A few of the more common barberries are the Crimson Pygmy barberry, Wintergreen barberry, Redleaf barberry and the Golden Carousel barberry.

Rosy Glow Barberry

To get the best color out of the Rosy glow make sure you plant it in full sun.

Planting the rosy glow barberry in shaded areas will give you foliage of solid green with just a tint of the red and pink color.

Use for a hedge or accent plant in the landscape. Add the Rosy glow in clusters of 3, 5 and 7 in your flower beds for accent among other flowering shrubs.

In the spring the Rosy glow will have a rose red glow, mottled white, along with a green foliage. In the Fall and Winter it will produce bright red berries.
