Abelia Mosanensis

Abelia mosanensis is also known as Bridal Bouquet or Fragrant Abelia. This plant has an intoxicating fragrance that will rival any lilac. The dark green leaves are the perfect backdrop to the pink and white flowers that bloom from spring through summer.

The blossoms are trumpet shaped with five petals. They grow in small clusters.

In the fall, the leaves turn to a brilliant orange red color. Even with its brilliant fall color, this semi-evergreen plant rarely loses its leaves, so the color lasts all winter long. The reddish stems turn gray-white in color in the winter, making a wonderful contrast.

This shrub is sure to please anyone with its graceful arching branches and strong fragrance. It grows to an average height of 5 or 6 feet tall, making it perfect for a border or foundation plant. The mosanensis is related to Honeysuckle and is the hardiest of all the Abelia family. Native to Korea, this shrub has found fans all over the world.

Landscaping Ideas

Use Abelia mosanensis as a specimen plant or add it to your foundation planting. Add it to your border or fence line for a nice colorful addition. This abelia makes a great accent or hedge plant.

Use it to make living screens or natural fencing. Plant it with dark green evergreens or with brightly colored perennials. Plant it by your back deck or near a window so you can enjoy the fragrance. It attracts many butterflies, bees and birds to your garden. This abelia is a perfect addition to your landscaping.

Planting and Care Tips

Plant your Abelia in a sunny spot. Water it regularly until it is well established. Feed it early in spring before new growth starts. Prune after flowering is done for the season.

Flower buds form in the fall, so do all your pruning before they set. Make sure you plant in moist, well drained soil. These loose graceful shrubs grow well with minimal care. They can propagated by cuttings or layering.

During cold winters, provide protection for the plant, though it is frost tolerant under most conditions.
